Kitbashing a rail crossing

One of the items I needed to work on got addressed recently and I was super happy about it. It's not complete yet, but it's on it's way. I hope to work on it some more this coming Monday.

There was a crossing I needed to make that goes over the high speed and freight areas. I was going to use a purchased crossing, but thought I could do a good job with styrene. So, I gave it a shot. I didn't have a lot of time to work on it, but I thought I could get a good start.

First, I thought about what i needed and the best way to get there. I looked up a few crossings, then dove in. I started by measuring and cutting a few styrene pieces. I popped them in place and made sure the trains cleared them.

I looked up some crossing markings in Japan and masked off some areas for painting.

Things started looking official!

The car and pedestrian crossings in place. The downside was the crossing signals. I need to get some reversed signals to replace he signals I have facing the wrong way currently. :)

Another round of details and scenic materials will top this off nicely. And, I made it so that I would still be able to pull the module in the back off to work on it if I wanted to.

So, I have a few more items to shop for. Some India ink for weathering and washes and some Japanese rail signals! Always something, right? :) I just love getting boxes from Japan! :)
Looking forward to working on this back track section soon!

  2. Nice job Malcom, there's something really cool about railroad crossings. I can imagine teenagers on a joyride accelerating through it and trying to get some air Dukes of Hazzard style. :)

    1. Ha! Thank you!
I'm not sure I'd want to try that with a high speed N•EX flying down the track at 80mph! :)
      Thanks for reading!
